Sahel began in the desert of Burkina Faso, where founder Charlie Davies lived for seven years among the Fulani. Horse lovers by tradition, Fulani people used to dress their steeds in vibrant tassles to accentuate the horse’s head movement. Traditional Fulani horse harnesses have strong braided straps which are hand woven by highly skilled leather workers. These unique skills have been paired with the work of traditional English bridle makers, to produce Sahel’s intricate bags. The brands straps and tassles are made using naturally tanned goat leather from Burkina Faso, while the bags themselves are either made by a local Burkinabe leatherworker, or are produced in Devon, England using sustainably sourced cow leather and suede. These are by-products of the food industry, decreasing material that goes to land fill. Equally, the brand adheres to Fair Trade principles and invest in their West African artisans’ communities.
